Microbiologist Louis Pasteur-His remarkable contribution in modern health sciences.

MDWIX TV
Today is significant for the birth day of a French scientist, Mr. Louis Pasteur. He embarked in the world of scientific invention & land marked on innovative culture on several diseases. In this topics we are discussing some aspects of this chemical scientist as well as a microbiologist. He is famous and remarkable for his discoveries in the fields of microbiology, chemistry and medicine.

His Born, Education, Life, Experiments and Invention.

Louis Pasteur was born on 27 th December in 1822 in Dole of France. His father was a tanner and decorated veteran of the Napoleonic wars. Pasteur was not a brilliant student in his academic career. Pasteur had early talent in drawing and painting. He attended primary schooling in Arbois and secondary schooling at Besancon. He got his bachelor of arts degree in 1840 and got his bachelor in science degree in 1842. Pasteur enrolled at the E'cole Normale Superieure in Paris. There he studied chemistry under Jean Baptiste Dumas. He obtained his doctorate degree in the year 1847. Then he joined as the professor of chemistry at the university of Strasbourg in 1848. There he had married Marie Laurent. They had five children. Three out of five children died of typhoid fever in their childhood. Pasteur's early research focused on the study of molecular asymmetry. Later he found that living organisms could produce only one form of these molecule but in chemical synthesis it could produce both forms.

Pasteur's research on fermentation led him to investigate the role of microorganism in the production of alcohol, vinegar and other products. He demonstrated that fermentation was caused by living yeasts that converted sugar into alcohol and carbon-di-oxide. He also stated that different yeasts produced different fermentation. He developed a special method of heating liquids to kill the harmful microbes.. This process is widely known as Pasteurization.

Pasteur's discoveries on fermentation and spontaneous generation paved the way for his development of germ theory of disease. He suggested that specific microorganism was responsible for specific disease. Thus he identified the bacteria responsible for anthrax, cholera, silkworm and rabies. He also developed methods to isolate, cultivate and study them. He claimed & established the idea that weak or dead microorganism could be used for treatment of infected people.

Pasteur's most famous achievement was his development of a vaccine against rabies. It is a fatal  disease transmitted by the bite of infected animals. He successfully tested his vaccine in the 1885 on a nine year old boy named Miester Joseph and he survived after bitten by a dog. He was the first human immunized against rabies. Thus Pasteur's invention saved countless lives world wide. He earned fame and admiration.

Pasteur's Award, Achievements & Foundation:

Pasteur got several honors and awards. He was awarded with Legion of Honour, The Copley medal, the Albert medal and the Leeuwenhoek medal. He was also elected to several prestigious academies and societies, such as French Academy of Sciences, The Royal Society of London, the National Academy of Sciences  America. He also founded Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1887 as a center of research and hospital for treatment of infectious disease. He died on September, 28 in 1895.

Conclusion: Louis Pasteur was a visionary scientist. He revolutionized our understanding of life and disease. He laid the foundation for the modern microbiology, immunology, public health and medicine. The whole world is paying tribute for his immeasurable contribution to medical science.
