What does yawning mean?
Yawning is a reflex of action that involves opening the mouth wide and inhaling deeply. It is usually associated with tiredness, boredom or lack of interest, but it can also be triggered by other factors such as hunger, stress, or temperature. Yawning is not a sign of illness, but it can sometimes indicate an underlying medical condition.

Causes: The exact causes of yawning are not fully understood, but some possible explanations are described as below.

Yawning helps to regulate the oxygen and carbon di oxide levels in the blood. When we are sleepy or bored, our breathing becomes shallow and slow, which reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood. Yawning increases the intake of oxygen and the inhalation of carbon di oxide, which stimulates the brain and improve alertness.

Yawning helps to cool down the brain. When we are awake for a long time, our brain temperature rises due to increased metabolic activity. Yawning increases the blood flow to the face and head, which cools down the brain and prevents overheating.

Yawning is a social signal that communicates our emotional state to others. When we yawn, we show our teeth and facial muscles , which can convey our feelings of boredom, fatigue or empathy. Yawning can also be contagious, meaning that we tend to yawn when we see or hear someone else yawn. This may be a way of synchronising our behaviour and mood with others.

Symptoms: Some common Symptoms that accompany yawning are such as, watery eyes, Stretching of arms, increased heart rate and blood pressure, feeling more alert and refreshed.

Remedies: Some remedies that can help to reduce yawning are such as, getting enough sleep, avoiding caffeine, alcohol, nicotine before bedtime, engaging in physical activity, drinking water & staying hydrated, breathing deeply slowly through nose, chewing gum or sucking a mint.
